Migration as a global aspect: Past and Present

Human migration is as old as human civilization itself. Looking back to the dawn of history, we are overawed with the scale and complexity of such migration. How and why such migration took place is shrouded in mystery, but there is no denying the fact that without such intermixing, human civilization would have been a lot porter than what it is today. The day when such exodus of human started, uprooting themselves from a familiar environment to search for the unknown, humanity has benefited from cross fertilization of ideas leading to enrichment in terms of culture, skill and know how technology and quality of life. The process is unending: only from and content have undergone unprecedented change.

The dawn of the 21st century is witnessing a tremendous surge in the development of human potential Dream of human being in exploring new frontiers of knowledge has surpassed all imagination. Looking back in retrospect, we become aware that the process of this change can be traced back to the middle of 17th century. It helped remove shackles which, in turn, pushed the humanity to know the undertake formidable voyages and reach breathtaking heights of human ingenuity and creativity.

The south Asian subcontinent has been a melting pot of civilization, from pr-Christian era when the first major inflow of the Asians took place till the invasion by the Mohguls, this region has seen merging of people of different races from far and near.

The Europeans, the Dutch, the French and the British were the last to come not as settlers but as traders first and empire builders late likewise, the region now comprising Bangladesh has been a witness to this changing kaleidoscope.

Conversely, people of this subcontinent also migrated to far off lands such as, South Africa, the Carribean, fiji and pacific islands in particular, more as indentured labor rather than voluntarily, never then less, they enriched the culture and civilization of their adopted countries. These emigrates have made significant contribution in promoting economic welfare and cultural enlightenment of the country of their adoption.

After the Second World War and specially following the end of colonial rule, a major exodus of people of this region took place especially to the U.K the former metropolitan country. Unfortunately, the present Bangladesh was slow in taking advantage of this newfound opportunity. Inspire of this drawback, large number of people of this migrated to the U.K settle there and actively participated in economic activities and political process. Presently, they constitute a significant segment of ethnic population of the U.K.

With the slow sown of economic activities in the developed countries and consequential restriction imposed on the inflow of immigrants, the traditional sources of the Gulf and Middle East but there is a qualitative difference Firstly, these countries offered temporary employment i.e. migrant workforce and not permanent residence. Secondly, movement of such workforce has to be organized requiring linkage between the need on the one hand and supply on the other. This called of sophisticated service agency that of a matchmaker to fuse together the requirement of the employing agency with the supply of available manpower from the supplying country. This has necessitated emergence of professional manpower recruiting agencies.
